Forum: GratefulDead Subject: God-like Phil Solos ab't 4 min into New Potato Caboose

I've been lurking for some time now, but finally decided to set up an acct so I can post about this.

10-12-68 at the Avalon may be the best example of this (if I'm wrong, maybe some of you more knowledgeable people can set me straight): as the subject line says, ab't 4 min in, Phil starts doing this amazing stuff that no other bassist could/can come close to, and most guitarists couldn't either ... it just starts to sound like a calliope on acid.

I searched on New Potato Caboose and found, for example, that this does not feature on the NPC in (one version of) 02-02-68 "Crystal Ballroom". It is there on the 08-22-68 at the Fillmore, but not on the 08-23-68 at Shrine (no NPC at all). I KNOW this is on TFTV, so it must have been on the 08-24-68 at Shrine.

My questions:

1. What is the first occurrence of this? Presumably sometime between Feb and Aug. 68?

2. Is there a version that is (even) better than what is on TFTV or on the 10-12 at Avalon?

Final "Phil is God" themed comment: I love the whole band. I love Jerry. But one speaks of other guitarists in (nearly) the same breath as one speaks of Jerry at his peak. But I don't think there are ANY bassists (maybe some of the pure jazz greats?) who can come close to what Phil did. One way of measuring greatness is how much better one is than one's peers.

Finally, to me, anyway, what sets the Dead (at their best) apart from any other band is their rhythmic complexity. Much of that is from Phil. A lot of the rest is from the drummers.

Wow, couple of old threads there from when I used to really post here. I still lurk.

To answer the main question, I think the first NPC we have with the bass solo is 2/24/68? Yet oddly enough I don't think there's a Phil lead in the two March versions we have. It isn't until the mystery reels where we see it really phleshed out. Much lik The Other One and Dark Star, all the early versions of NPC are played more or less without much dynamics, the missing evolution of all three songs, among others, is probably the most tragic era of tape gaps, with all of 1967 a close second, and much of 1970 ranking third. With me, anyway.

As I recall there is a short Phil solo in Anthem (this section of the jam is from 3/17/68, the show from the Download Series) but I don't think it is what the original poster had in mind.

We've discussed this a number of times, and this should mention some of my favs:

Jack Bruce, my friend; Jack Bruce could do these sorts of things...

:)

And, just as he was great, so too w Phil...meaning, I agree about the importance of the bass players in both bands.

You seem to like talented bass players. You might also check out some of the bass work by Tim "God of Thunder" Bogert...Vanilla Fudge; Beck, Bogert, and Appice; Cactus; Bobby and The Midnights

In Will Tell's link Capt. Cook references the 1.24.69 show. CM posted an update. Here you go: https://archive.org/details/gd1969-01-24.sbd.fix.miller.110304.flac16

1) The earliest version with the Phil solo is in an unlabeled show from May or June '68.
2) No, there isn't. There's a link to a history of NPC deep in the thread WT linked - you'll want to check out the other versions from late '68/early '69.
